Free influenza vaccine

Influenza vaccination is free to people who are at increased risk of influenza complications, including:

  • 65 years and over
  • Pregnant women
  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children aged six months to less than five years and aged 15 years and over.
  • Anyone aged six months and over with a chronic condition.

Parent’s whooping cough vaccine program

Pregnant women and their partners are eligible for free pertussis containing vaccine. Vaccinating women against pertussis in the third trimester of every pregnancy provides two-for-one protection. The mother is protected and antibodies produced against pertussis during pregnancy are transferred to the infant in utero, providing the newborn infant with protection.

Both of these immunisations are available at the Langton Medical Centre.  Please call 9791 8888 to book an appointment.

National Bowel Cancer Screening Program, 2016

By | Uncategorized | No Comments

Approximately two million Australians will be invited to screen for bowel cancer free of charge in 2016 with the continued rollout of the National Bowel Cancer Screening Program (NBCSP).  In 2016: 50, 55, 60, 64, 65, 70, 72 and 74 year-olds will be invited to the NBSCP, with the ages 64 and 72 added for the first time.  By 2020, all Australians aged 50 to 74 will be invited to participate every two years.  Research shows that 70,000 deaths can be prevented in Australia in the coming 40 years with full roll-out of the program.  Fewer than four in ten Victorians who are invited to screen are sending back a completed test kit.  Nine in ten bowel cancers can be successfully treated with early detection.  Health care providers can play an important role in encouraging their clients to send back their completed tests.  For more information on the NBCSP click here.
